Easy Italian with Laura post: You feel embarrassed because you speak slowly

Someone asks you a question in Italian. You understood most of it… and then your mind goes blank. You smile, you nod, and the moment is gone.

This happens to almost every learner. The good news: you don't need perfect Italian to stay in the conversation. You need a few phrases ready for exactly this moment.

Seven phrases for when you freeze

Italian English
Scusi, può ripetere? Sorry, could you repeat that?
Più lentamente, per favore. More slowly, please.
Non ho capito. I didn't understand.
Sto imparando l'italiano. I'm learning Italian.
Come si dice … in italiano? How do you say … in Italian?
Cosa vuol dire …? What does … mean?
Un attimo, per favore. One moment, please.

Scusi and può are the polite forms you use with people you don't know — in shops, offices or at the doctor's. With friends, use Scusa, puoi ripetere?

Why "Sto imparando l'italiano" works so well

It's short, it's easy to remember, and it changes the conversation. Most people will slow down, choose simpler words and be happy that you're trying. You're not apologising — you're simply telling them how to help you.

Practise before you need it

Pick two phrases and say them out loud a few times today. The goal is that they come out automatically, even when you're nervous. That's exactly the kind of practice we do in lessons: real situations, repeated until they feel natural.
